Rams Preview – Week 1

Week 1 is finally here. No more projections. No more preseason speculation. It’s time for real football — and the San Francisco 49ers are opening the season against the Los Angeles Rams on the other side of the world.

In this episode of Niners Nation, John, Tim and Brian preview the massive 49ers-Rams showdown in Melbourne, Australia.

The Rams have spent the offseason building what looks like a superteam on paper, including a terrifying defensive front featuring Myles Garrett and the returning Aaron Donald. 

So how does Brock Purdy survive? 

The guys break down how Kyle Shanahan can use Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Mike Evans, motion, quick passes and the running game to neutralize the Rams’ pass rush and keep San Francisco out of third-and-long.

On the other side of the ball, we finally get to see what the new-look 49ers defense can do. Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw are back, but they’ll immediately be tested by Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams and one of the NFL’s most dangerous play-action attacks.

Then there’s the Australia factor. The 49ers arrived early, chartered a massive Airbus A380 and have spent days acclimating and building their presence in Melbourne. The Rams are taking the opposite approach. Could San Francisco’s preparation — and what appears to be a surprisingly pro-49ers crowd — become a legitimate Week 1 advantage?
